A practical 10-day Latvia and Lithuania itinerary

This route gives each capital enough time, adds one Latvian side trip and keeps the international transfer direct. It works best as an open-jaw journey, arriving in one capital and departing from the other.

Check before travel

Timetables, opening hours, access rules and event programmes can change. Confirm date-specific details with the official operator or venue.

Days 1 to 3: Riga

Use three nights for Old Town, the boulevards, Central Market, the Art Nouveau district and one substantial museum. Keep the first day light if it follows an international arrival.

Day 1

Old Town, riverfront and an early evening.

Day 2

Central Market, boulevards and one museum.

Day 3

Art Nouveau streets and a neighbourhood or extra museum.

Days 4 and 5: one Latvian extension

Choose one extension rather than collecting distant stops. Jūrmala is simplest for coast and a short transfer; Sigulda or Cēsis gives more landscape and castle time.

Day 6: Riga to Vilnius

LTG Link publishes the current direct Vilnius and Riga service information. Check the timetable for your date, reserve the correct train and allow margin between separate onward tickets.

Before booking

Confirm direction, date, seat conditions, luggage terms and the station shown on the ticket.

On travel day

Arrive early enough to find the platform without compressing the rest of the day.

Days 7 to 10: Vilnius and one Lithuanian choice

Use at least two full days in Vilnius. With the remaining time, choose one coherent extension, such as Trakai or Kaunas, based on current transport and your departure point.

Vilnius

Keep the old town, museums and neighbourhoods across separate walking blocks.

One extension

Choose Trakai for a shorter outing or Kaunas for another city stay.

Return or fly onward

An open-jaw ticket avoids backtracking if fares and flight times work.

Useful route variants

With more time, add Liepāja and Klaipėda only if the overland connection fits the exact travel date. With less time, keep Riga and Vilnius and drop the regional extension.

Seven days

Three nights Riga, one transfer day and three nights Vilnius.

Fourteen days

Add one Latvian region and one Lithuanian region, keeping two-night minimum stays.
