Latvia Travel Costs: What to Budget in 2026

Latvia can suit both economical city breaks and more comfortable regional trips, but the total cost depends heavily on accommodation dates, transport choices and how far you travel outside Riga. Public transport remains modestly priced, while central accommodation, restaurant dining, rental cars and rural transfers can increase the budget quickly.

This guide uses dated price examples and transparent planning allowances. It does not pretend that one national daily average will suit every traveller.

Recheck variable prices

Transport fares, visitor fees, admission prices and booking conditions can change. Confirm each changeable item for the actual travel date before paying.

Latvia travel costs: the quick answer

Accommodation is normally the largest variable. Search the exact dates first, then add food, every transport leg, paid attractions, local taxes and a contingency amount. State whether room prices are per room or per person, and whether a shared cost is divided between travellers.

Riga public transport and several major museums provide useful fixed anchors. Hotel rates, restaurant bills, rental cars and private transfers vary too much by date and booking terms to support a single honest national daily price.

How to calculate your trip budget

Begin with the total room price for the exact stay. Add a daily food allowance for each traveller, transport for the complete route, admission for planned attractions, local taxes and costs that have not yet been paid. Finish with a contingency allowance of 10 to 15 per cent.

Keep flights separate so that two versions of the total remain useful: the cost of the trip inside Latvia and the complete cost from home. The calculator below follows this method.

Name the unit

Mark every figure as per room, per vehicle, per journey or per person.

Divide shared costs once

A €120 room is €60 per person when two people share, but €120 for a solo traveller.

Separate paid and unpaid costs

A booked hotel still belongs in the trip total even when it should not be counted in the cash still needed.

Accommodation costs

Accommodation is usually the largest and most changeable part of the budget. Search the exact dates before setting a daily total, especially for summer weekends, festivals and major events.

Compare the final price rather than the first room rate shown. Check breakfast, cancellation rights, cleaning charges, parking and local taxes. A cheaper property outside central Riga can require extra public transport, taxis or travel time. In regional towns, measure the route from both the station and the main attraction.

Compare live stays

Search by location, provider, property type and guest rating, then compare the final booking terms.

Open guide

Per room is not per person

State how many travellers share the room before using the price in a sample budget.

Breakfast can change the comparison

A room that includes breakfast can cost less overall than a lower headline rate followed by a daily café visit.

Food and drink costs

There is no single reliable Latvian meal price. Costs differ between supermarkets, market stalls, bakeries, neighbourhood cafés and full-service restaurants in central Riga. Build the allowance from the meals you expect to buy rather than copying an unexplained daily average.

Split the daily amount into breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks. If accommodation includes breakfast or a kitchen, adjust the allowance rather than counting the same meal twice. Check a current menu when a particular restaurant matters to the trip.

Economical plan

Combine supermarket purchases, bakery food and simple lunches, with selected restaurant meals.

Comfortable plan

Allow separately for table-service dinners, alcoholic drinks, coffee and desserts.

Remember the deposit

Eligible marked drink containers add a refundable €0.10 deposit at purchase.

Getting around Riga

A 90-minute Rīgas satiksme ticket costs €1.50. Visitor passes cost €5 for 24 hours, €8 for three days and €10 for five days. Tickets cover the operator’s buses, trams and trolleybuses under the published conditions and must be validated whenever you board. Prices checked 26 July 2026.

A traveller making one or two journeys may spend less with 90-minute tickets. Someone using transport repeatedly may benefit from a pass. Much of central Riga is walkable, so compare the accommodation location and actual journey plan before buying automatically.

Riga Airport transfer costs

Bus 22 accepts the normal €1.50 time ticket. A one-way ticket bought from the driver costs €1.81 and can be paid for only by bank card. The airport says the trip to the city centre takes about 40 minutes. Prices checked 26 July 2026.

Riga Airport also sells a €33.50 prepaid taxi voucher for one direct trip to the designated central zone, for up to four passengers with luggage. That is €33.50 for a solo traveller but about €8.38 each when four people share. Taxi time is about 20 minutes in normal traffic, but the airport advises that traffic can affect it.

Trains and regional buses

Price the exact route and service. Vivi’s published single-fare table starts at €1.30 for the shortest fare band from 15 January 2026, but longer journeys and specified higher-fare trains cost more. Tickets can be bought online, in the app, at ticket offices or from the conductor.

An extra €1 applies when a ticket is bought on the train and the boarding station has an operating ticket office. Include the journey to the station, baggage charges where applicable, local transport at the destination, the return journey and a taxi or other backup for a rural final leg.

Plan a car-free route

Compare destinations, rail corridors, regional buses and the last kilometre.

Open guide

Search exact dates

General route maps do not show temporary changes, the useful return service or a higher-fare train.

Rental cars, fuel and parking

Use a live quote for the exact driver, dates, pickup point and vehicle class. Keep the base rental price separate from insurance, excess reduction, fuel, parking, deposits, additional drivers, one-way charges and child seats.

A low headline daily rate is not the road-trip total. Compare the final payable amount and card-deposit requirement, then add a route-based fuel and parking allowance. A car can be useful for rural areas, but it is rarely needed for a central Riga stay.

Keep a transport comparison

Use the car-free guide to identify which parts of the route genuinely need a vehicle.

Open guide

Do not divide a car by the wrong group size

A vehicle quote may be shared, while insurance conditions and extra-driver charges apply to the booking.

Attractions, museums and free experiences

Current adult examples include €8 for the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, €10 for the permanent exhibition at the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, and €12 for Rundāle Palace’s main exhibition. The palace and French garden combined ticket is €17 from April to October. Prices checked 26 July 2026.

Walking through Riga’s historic streets, public parks and beaches does not normally require admission. Nature trails may also be free to enter, although transport, parking, equipment rental or a particular visitor facility can add a cost.

Free or usually free

Historic streets, public parks, beaches and many nature trails.

Lower-cost admission

Selected museums, local history collections and temporary exhibitions.

Higher-cost activities

Guided tours, palace combinations, adventure activities, equipment rental and private excursions.

Tourism taxes and additional charges

Riga’s municipal visitor fee is currently €0.89 before VAT per taxable guest per night, capped at €8.90 before VAT for one uninterrupted stay. Accommodation providers generally present that as about €1 per night including VAT, with a total of about €10 for ten nights. Prices checked 26 July 2026.

Riga has approved an increase from 1 January 2027 to €1.78 before VAT, approximately €2 including VAT, with the cap rising accordingly. Use the date of the stay, not the booking date, when checking the charge.

Arrival and departure

Count the airport transfer in both directions.

Last-mile transport

Rural taxis, parking and the trip from a station to an attraction are easy to omit.

Booking conditions

Add cleaning, luggage, event booking, car insurance and one-way fees where they apply.

Small cash costs

Public toilets and other small purchases may be easier with coins or low-denomination notes.

Refundable deposits

The €0.10 drink-container deposit returns to the traveller only when the eligible container is returned.

Three transparent budget examples

These examples demonstrate the calculation. Accommodation, food and vehicle amounts are editable planning allowances, not claims about average market prices. Flights are excluded and each example adds a 10 per cent contingency.

Money, cards and cash

Latvia uses the euro. Cards are practical for most travel purchases, but carrying some euro cash is sensible for public toilets, small vendors, tips and situations where a payment terminal or network is unavailable.

Latvijas Banka notes that euro cash remains legal tender and does not depend on equipment, internet access or electricity. Check your own bank’s foreign transaction and ATM fees before travel.

Latvia travel cost questions

Is Latvia expensive for tourists?

It can work for economical or comfortable trips. Public transport has clear modest fares, while accommodation dates, restaurant choices, rental cars and rural transfers cause the largest variation.

How much does a three-day trip to Riga cost?

There is no reliable universal total. The worked solo example on this page is about €477 excluding flights, based on three €90 room nights, €45 daily food, current transit and museum prices, local tax and 10 per cent contingency. Replace those assumptions with your dates.

How much should two people budget for Latvia?

Start with the room total, then add food for two, shared and per-person transport, admissions, local taxes and contingency. The worked seven-day car-free example is about €1,861 for two, but its accommodation and food figures are planning allowances.

What does public transport cost in Riga?

On 26 July 2026, a 90-minute ticket cost €1.50. Passes cost €5 for 24 hours, €8 for three days and €10 for five days.

Is Bus 22 included in normal Riga tickets?

Yes. Bus 22 accepts the normal €1.50 time ticket. A one-way ticket bought from the driver costs €1.81 and is payable only by bank card.

Is there a tourist tax in Riga?

Yes. The current fee is €0.89 before VAT per taxable guest per night, normally about €1 including VAT, and it is capped after ten nights of one uninterrupted stay.

Will Riga’s visitor fee change in 2027?

Riga has approved an increase from 1 January 2027 to €1.78 before VAT, approximately €2 including VAT, per taxable guest per night. Confirm the final accommodation invoice for the stay dates.

Can I pay by card in Latvia?

Cards are practical for most visitor spending, but some euro cash remains useful for small payments and as a backup. Check fees with your own bank.

Is it cheaper to travel by train or rental car?

It depends on the route and group size. Price exact train journeys against the complete vehicle cost, including insurance, fuel, parking, deposits and extra drivers.

Are museums expensive?

Current adult examples range from €8 at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia to €17 for Rundāle Palace and its French garden in season. Special exhibitions, tours and family tickets differ.

What activities are free?

Historic street walks, public parks, beaches and many nature trails are normally free to enter, although transport, parking or equipment may still cost money.

Is it cheaper to stay outside Riga Old Town?

The room may be cheaper, but compare the final total. Daily transport, taxis and extra travel time can remove the saving.

Do train tickets cost more when bought on board?

Vivi adds €1 when a passenger buys on board at a station with an operating ticket office. Other supplements can apply to specified higher-fare trains.
